VNG/ENG Instructions



VIDEONYSTAGMOGRAPHY (VNG)/ ELECTRONYSTAGMOGRAPHY (ENG) INSTRUCTIONS

 

This test will be recording your eye movements in order to evaluate your balance (vestibular) system. The appointment will last between 1 and 2 hours.

 

PATIENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Arrive 15 minutes before the appointment and wear comfortable clothes.
  • DO NOT drink alcohol for at least 48 hours before the test.
  • DO NOT drink any liquids with caffeine for at least 12 hours before the test.
  • DO NOT eat food for at least 3 hours before the test.
  • DO NOT use any tobacco products on the day of the test.
  • DO NOT wear any makeup, especially mascara & eyeliner, as it will interfere with the test .
  • Remove contact lenses before the test.
  • Because this test may cause a mild temporary feeling of imbalance, it may be beneficial to have someone drive you home after the test.
  • If you were referred for testing by a provider outside of Otolaryngology Associates, you must provide your referral prior to or at the time of your appointment. HMO patients are also required to have a referral from their primary care provider (PCP) for this evaluation. 

 

Several medications will affect the results of the test. It is important that you STOP TAKING the medications listed below 48 hours before the test, with permission from your prescribing physician.

  • Sleeping Pills & Sedatives
  • Tranquilizers (Valium, Librium, etc.)
  • Prescription Pain Medications & Muscle Relaxants
  • Anti-anxiety/Anti-depressants
  • Anti-seizure medications
  • Diuretics (water pills)
  • Antihistamines (Benadryl, Claritin, Allegra, etc.) (Allergy eye drops are OK to use)
  • Anti-dizziness medications (Antivert, D-vert, Dramamine, Bonine)

 ****DO NOT STOP TAKING BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATIONS!****

DO NOT STOP TAKING PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF YOUR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER.

**If you CANNOT discontinue any of the above medications for 48 hours, you must must receive clearance from your referring provider in order to proceed with testing.

***It is the PATIENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to follow the above instructions completely or the test may be cancelled.

 

***If you must cancel your test appointment, please provide a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice. Failure to do so may result in a $150 cancellation charge.
