After evaluation, the treatment might include antibiotics, pain-relieving medications or the placement of ear tubes. Ear tubes are tiny tubes that allow air into the middle ear and prevent fluid from building up. They significantly decrease the chance of future ear infections.
Here are some reasons why your pediatrician may recommend that you consult with an ENT provider for ear infections:
- More than 4 infections in 6 months
- Ear infections in children with speech delay
- Persistent fluid in the ears (more than 3 months)
- Ear infections requiring multiple antibiotics
- Children who have allergies to the antibiotics or bad side effects from the medication causing nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
