Acute infections of the tonsils result in pain and inflammation of the tonsil tissue and may require antibiotics if caused by a bacteria. Other symptoms you may see include:
- Fever
- Enlarged, red tonsils
- Tonsils may appear to have a white coating or spots
- Pain with swallowing
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Abdominal pain
- Bad breath
- Rash – if related to Group A Beta Hemolytic Strep or Scarlet Fever
In cases of chronic tonsillitis, you may have a constant sore throat, tonsil stones, or persistent bad breath.
In the case of recurrent or chronic tonsillitis, you or your child may suffer from multiple infections per year or have a constant sore throat. If this is the case, you or your child may benefit from surgical intervention in the form of a tonsillectomy. Please contact our office if you would like to discuss your symptoms with one of our providers.
If recurrent infections or chronic tonsillitis is not your concern, but there is a concern about enlarged tonsil, take a look at our information on Obstructive Sleep Apnea in the pediatric patient.
